Ironfest was lucky enough to have the very talented Waratah Drum Corps perform on both days of the festival this year. The Drum Corps showed an impressive display of heart, choreography and pure rhythm, resulting in a performance that stopped the crowd and demanded everyone’s attention. Hailing from Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, the group enlisted the help of Smartlink Transport to get the performers to and from the festival on both days. Volunteer drivers were keen to jump behind the wheel, especially on the promise of seeing such a unique and sought after group perform. Smartlink is proud to support local groups such as the Waratah Drum Corps and we look forward to their next thrilling performance.

Have you seen this bus zipping around the Blue Mountains? Here are some FAQs about the buses.

Who owns the buses?
The Community Access Buses are owned by Blue Mountains City Council. The hire of these vehicles is managed through Smartlink Transport.

Who is eligible to use the buses?
Not for profit, community based groups are invited to make use of this fantastic resource. Some groups include garden clubs, youth groups, craft groups, sustainability groups etc. We welcome many and various interest groups.

Who can I talk to about the buses without making a booking or commitment to hire?
If you are curious about the buses or would like to know if your group is eligible to hire a bus, simply call Erin on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday on 4759 3260. This is the number that appears on the side of the buses.

Where can I take the buses?
Standard hire covers up to 250km per day of travel. The buses may be hired overnight and taken to most places. There are some roads and surfaces that are not accessible, due to its length.

Can anyone drive them?
You must have a minimum LR class licence and hold a BMCC Green Card to drive the Community Access Buses. Erin can give you all the details on how to get yourself set up as an accredited driver.

How many are there?
There are the two Community Access buses. One is garaged in Springwood and the other in Katoomba. This gives choice to groups depending on where they’re travelling to or where most of their passengers live.

You’re organising a private function, such as a Hen’s night or 21st. Can you hire the bus?
No, unfortunately. The buses aren’t for one off private functions.

How long may I hire the bus for?
Two nights and three days in a row is the maximum allowable hire. Weekends and nights are available, also.

May I eat and drink on the buses?
No. It’s important to plan stops for eating and drinking as it is not allowed on the Community Access Bus.

The Community Access Buses are an amazing community resource, aimed at giving small groups and members of the Blue Mountains community a chance to get out and about and enjoy spending time with their respective groups.

Community Access Bus Launch

Two brand new Community Access Buses were launched on Tuesday 12th February by Blue Mountains City Council in conjunction with Great Community Transport. The twenty one seater Toyota Coasters are fully automatic and replace the well-used, manual Coasters that have been in service to the community for over seven years.

Typical upper mountains weather provided a misty backdrop for the occasion held at The Conservation Hut, Wentworth Falls. Present for the launch was Councillor Chris Van Der Kley, Helen Walker OAM, Manager of Great Community Transport as well as volunteer drivers and representatives from various community groups that utilise this critical community resource.

There was a true sense of occasion to the gathering. Following speeches, thankyous and anecdotes, volunteers and groups had a rare chance to meet one another as well as the staff and organisers that make the Access Bus a success.

The overriding message was one of gratitude and appreciation with the upgrade of the buses described as “A marvellous and noble gesture by Blue Mountains City Council.” By Tim Sanford, volunteer driver and member of the Central Blue Mountains Garden Club, regularly users of the Access Bus for social outings and club events.

The 21 seater (including driver) Access Buses are available to hire for not for profit community groups based in the Blue Mountains. They serve as a vital lifeline for many small and special interest groups as an affordable way of taking day or overnight trips.

This fabulous resource is a great example of cooperation. Blue Mountains City Council, keen community groups and tireless volunteers work together to benefit the community as a whole, especially the aged and frail, low income and transport disadvantaged. Look out for the shiny new buses and their happy passengers as they move up and down the Mountains on their way to exciting destinations.

Driver Training Calendar

Training is provided free of charge to all members of the Volunteer Driver Pool. The pool consists of people who drive for groups other than their own. Please contact us if you would like to join the pool.

BMCC Access Bus – New Fees

As of 1 July 2012, there is a new fee schedule for the BMCC Access Bus as below:

$98 for up to 12 hours

$105 for 12-24 hours

$37 extra if the trip is over 300km

$59 extra if the trip is over 450km

$33 to organise a volunteer driver (or $30 if requested through SmartLink)

$38 cancellation fee (if more than 4 weeks’ notice provided, otherwise full fees charged)

As the Access Bus is subsidised by Blue Mountains City Council, it is less expensive than other large vehicles on the SmartLink Transport Register, where fees start at $120.
